To be part of the ALTEN team you shouldn’t be necessarily an engineer: we are always looking for the best talents in different disciplines. This is the case of Tiina, Technical Writer at ALTEN Finland with a background in Languages and Marketing. Read her interview below and discover more about her experience.
Could you introduce yourself in a few words?
Hi, my name is Tiina. I am a technical writer at ALTEN Finland, Lahti. Lahti is one of ALTEN’s nine offices in Finland and has over 40 personnel at the moment. I am part of the technical documentation team, which was started only last year and consists already of six people.
Could you tell us about your background and how you got this job opportunity?
My background is in languages and marketing. I have a master’s degree in English from the University of Jyväskylä where I also studied business. In addition, I recently graduated from Lahti University of Applied Sciences with a bachelor’s degree in business administration focusing on marketing. I heard about this job position from a former coworker who I bumped into out of the blue. I decided to apply for the job and was fortunate enough to be offered a position at ALTEN.
Do you feel integrated in the company? How have you been welcomed?
The atmosphere at ALTEN Finland has been very welcoming. I have visited the offices in Hyvinkää and Espoo and have experienced the same warm atmosphere there as well. The orientation on the first day was very thorough and getting to know the other employees has been fun. Most of my coworkers are either starting their careers or have already worked for a few years, so most of the people here are quite young. I feel that this brings positive enthusiasm, willingness to learn and a can-do attitude to the workplace.
Almost half of my coworkers are working in our clients’ premises, so they are rarely seen at the office. Luckily, we have a very active group of volunteers who plan different activities and get-togethers each month. This year, we have tried different sports such as billiards and bowling, and also gone to a smoke sauna. They even arranged seats at the premiere of the new Star Wars movie last December so that everyone could go and see the movie together. The next larger get-together is a 22-hour cruise to Tallinn that involves several offices so we will be able to socialize with our colleagues from different cities as well.
What have you liked about working at ALTEN?
I have really enjoyed working at ALTEN. The projects that I have participated in have been varied and included translating, editing and proofreading manuals as well as working with templates. Due to my background in marketing, I have also assisted the marketing department by editing marketing materials. Carrying out projects at the office is easy and efficient because of ergonomic workspaces and helpful colleagues.
What could be the next step for you in a medium term period?
Working at ALTEN offers different opportunities for professional growth. At the moment, I feel that I still have quite a lot to learn in the field of technical writing. However, after a year or two, I could imagine taking on a more responsible role, for example as a business manager.
